MD obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Biochemistry/Chemistry at the University of Sheffield. He continued at the Krebs Institute, where he obtained his PhD. Following his PhD, he joined a biotechnology company, Transgenomic LTD where he worked as a research scientist developing analytical techniques including DNA/RNA chromatography. He joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield in 2003. He is a member of number of research centres/institutes at the University of Sheffield including the Krebs Institute, Advanced Biomanufacturing Centre (ABC) and Sheffield Institute for Nucleic Acids (SInFoNiA). He is currently the Interim Faculty Director of Research & Innovation for Engineering.
